Georga Godwin | Mental Health & Capacity Law Solicitor & Trainer

Georga is a senior lawyer currently practicing as a Consultant and Freelance Solicitor, specializing in mental health and capacity law. 

Georga is a highly-experienced human rights lawyer, representing forensic patients and children, especially patients with autism.  Georga represents both those detained in hospital to help them navigate psychiatric services, and the NHS, equipping those working in psychiatric services and peers with the legal skills and knowledge to help protect the human rights of all those detained under the Mental Health Act.

Georga provides legal opinions and capacity assessments for NHS Trusts, ICBs, and Provider Collaboratives, mainly regarding risk-management strategies and legal frameworks for high-profile cases, although all aspects of detention and discharge frameworks are covered.

Georga is an experienced trainer, providing training on all aspects of mental health and capacity law for NHSE, various NHS Trusts and the Royal College of Psychiatrists, including running the Medico-Legal Masterclasses, S. 12 MHA, and Approved Clinician courses. She is also takes the lead as the cross-examiner in the Tribunal Simulation Training for the Forensic Psychiatry Training Programme for the East of England.

Georga was called to the Bar in July 2005 as a member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn, and was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in 2008. She is a member of The Law Society’s Mental Health Panel, and the Mental Health Lawyers Association.

Georga was short-listed for The Law Society’s Human Rights Lawyer of the Year 2018, (the only mental health lawyer ever to be nominated). She is a contributor to the Oxford Textbook of In-Patient Psychiatry (OUP, 2019), and co-author on the article ‘Giving Medical Evidence to the First-tier Tribunal Mental Health’ (OUP, 2025).
